Head to Senado Square in Macao’s UNESCO World Heritage listed Historic Centre to experience the Macao’s largest and most spectacular Chinese New Year parade. Here, the city’s unique east-meets-west heritage creates a stunning backdrop for the streets to come alive. Red lanterns gently sway between the centuries old colonial buildings of Macao’s Portuguese trading post past as dancing lions and intricately decorated floats parade by. The famous Macao winding dragon takes centre stage at the event. At 200-metres in length, it’s a sight to behold! Watch as it snakes through the historic district, taking in the 16th century A-Ma Temple and Mediterranean inspired Lilau Square.

A city of tradition

Visiting Macao’s temples is particularly evocative at Chinese New Year. Expect the air to be heavy with incense and the sound of drumming as locals flock to leave good luck offerings and get their fortunes told for the next 12 months.

XHEAD: A blooming wonderful display

Flowers are particularly important in Macanese culture with every bloom holding a special significance. What better place to find out more than the Flower Market in Tap Seac Square. Here, you’ll mingle with locals as they select flowers to decorate their homes and temples and give to loved ones as gifts at this special time of year. Most arrive after dark, so plan your visit for around 8pm to soak up the celebratory atmosphere and enjoy the stunning visual display.

Celebrate with a bang!

As night falls, make sure you’re in the best spot to see the sky above Macao sparkle with a stunning firework display. Head to the lake near the Macau Tower or the shore of Taipa Island to join the locals and watch the breath-taking show.

The only way is up

Standing at 338 metres tall, the Macau Tower is a spectacle in itself! Why not make your way inside before the fireworks display? Enjoy a delicious meal with unrivalled views of the city from the revolving restaurant and pick up a few souvenirs in the Tower’s many shops.

XHEAD: Best foot forward

Walking around Macao is one of the best ways to take in all the sights and sounds of Chinese New Year. The free Step Out Macao app has eight suggested itineraries, all taking you through the main tourist sights. Download the app to your smartphone and immerse yourself in the celebrations, making sure you end up on the Macao Peninsula in time for the fireworks.
