Government finally steps in to help drought-ravaged farmers

Drought-affected farmers have been given some relief today with a new Drought Transport Fund announced by the government.

They’ll be given access to low-interest loans of up to $20,000, with a two-year interest and repayment free period.

The money can be used on food and water for stock, or to move them to agistment if needed.

Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair tells Alan they’ve also made it easier for farmers to apply.

“This is something that is for those that really need it.

“We don’t need to be spending hours filling in paperwork and we’ll monitor that.

“But with every piece of taxpayers’ dollar obviously we have to make sure that there are some forms that are filled in and that’ll help us also target other things like our rural resilience workers.”
