Australia Day, January 26, is the day to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate contemporary Australia and to acknowledge our history.

The natural beauty, a fair go for all, lifestyle, democracy and particularly our people.

Millions of Aussies flock to events all over the country to show pride in this nation.

Steve Price runs through a list of the top events happening in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra.

Sydney events:

  • Indigenous performers will perform at Walumil Lawns at around 8.30am and the KARI Singers will sing the national anthem in English and Dharawal on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
  • The harbour will be strewn with ships and ferries including the HMAS Canberra and a 21-gun salute will be fired from Bradfield Park in North Sydney at around midday.
  • A fleet of yachts, tugboats, jetskis and ferries are then set to perform an aquatic ballet, manoeuvring in unison to classical music on the harbour.
  • The 182nd Australia Day Regatta – the oldest continuously conducted annual regatta in the world – will be held.
  • As the sun goes down, Christine Anu, Guy Sebastian and John Paul Young will join a cavalcade of stars at the Live at Sydney Opera House concert.
  • A spectacular fireworks finale featuring a musical medley of Australian classics will light up the harbour to finish the celebrations in the city.
  • Parramatta will stage a marathon 15-hour celebration starting with a dawn hot air balloon display. Icons Daryl Braithwaite and Kate Ceberano will headline a concert in Parramatta Park at night.
