‘He wasn’t the same person’: Darryl Brohman’s BBQ with ‘devastated’ Shane Flanagan

Darryl Brohman has revealed the true toll the Cronulla Sharks scandal has had on Shane Flanagan.

The 53-year-old was deregistered in December following an NRL investigation into his conduct while serving a one-year ban in 2014.

The Integrity Unit found Flanagan remained in close and constant contact with the club, despite being banned from doing so.

The premiership-winning coach has not appealed the decision at this stage, instead announcing his resignation from the club.

“This was obviously one of the toughest decisions of my 36-year rugby league career to resign from the head coaching role at Cronulla,” Flanagan said in a statement.

“The last month has taken an enormous mental and emotional toll on my family and myself.”

Flanagan’s close friend and 2GB Continuous Call Team member Darryl Brohman tells Ben Fordham he’s seen the toll it’s taken first hand.

“He’d be devastated. He’s been really upset by this for a long time now.

“I actually had him over for a barbeque a couple of weeks ago and he just wasn’t the same person.

“He was very introverted, he was very quiet.

“It has had a massive effect on him and his family.”
