‘I wasn’t prepared’: Australia’s Strongest Man’s battle with PTSD
He was once Australia’s Strongest Man, then he was a highly respected police officer. Now, he’s on a mission to help others struggling with their mental health.
Grant Edwards has led a truly remarkable life. He was once The Strongest Man in Australia, known for pulling planes, trains, trucks and ships.
When he joined the Australian Federal Police in 1985, he began a long career fighting child exploitation and human trafficking.
But he tells John Stanley he really wasn’t ready to deal with the horrendous things he would see in his line of work.
“I knew, joining the police, you see things and experience things, but I guess when you join you don’t really think too much about that.
“I hadn’t prepared myself psychologically for what I would experience.”
After he came close to committing suicide after struggling with PTSD, he’s now committed to helping others who are going through the same thing.
“You’ve got to start to have that conversation because then you will realise that you’re not alone, that there are many other people like you and that there are many other people out there that are willing to help.”
