NSW could ban smartphones in schools as state launches investigation

Smartphones could soon be banned in New South Wales schools as the state launches a review into phone use within school grounds.

As one of the biggest issues plaguing children at schools today, NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes is launching an Australian-first review into phone use in classrooms across the state.

“The problem is addiction, because addiction leads to distraction and then the distraction becomes perpetual,” says Chris Smith.

Child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg is leading the review which will examine the positives and negatives of the technology in schools.

He tells Chris “there is absolutely a problem.”

“I think a lot of the cyber-bullying is because kids have not been taught how to use the smartphones in a safe, smart and responsible manner.”
