Public services union hits back at Prime Minister’s focus on Centrelink wait times

The Community and Public Sector Union has hit back after the Prime Minister suggested Centrelink focuses on reducing call waiting times.

Scott Morrison has warned public servants must focus on the “quiet Australians” and look beyond the Canberra ‘bubble’ in an address to the Institute of Public Administration.

There were more than 44 million missed calls to Centrelink between July 2016 and May 2017 and CPSU National Secretary Nadine Flood says the Turnbull government is responsible for cutting 5000 jobs from Human Services.

She tells Ben Fordham “it might help if they actually put some of the staff back on the phones.”

“The quiet Australians, I reckon, are getting pretty loudly annoyed at not being able to get those services.

“People who work in Centrelink are incredibly frustrated, there are less of them than ever, they’ve got old creaky IT systems and they can’t do a great job.

“If the Prime Minister is serious about it there is a lot of money that could be saved in some of the big end of town contracts.”
